Pore perfection

When Melmeko asked a very important question pertaining to pores, we just had to get it answered by NIVEA expert, Ken Lee…
Q: “As we get older our pores start to become more visibly noticeable. What is your advice to someone who is feeling self conscious about visible pores? Can they really be reduced or is that just a myth?” - Melmeko
A: It may be difficult, but the best advice when it comes to pores is to not spend too much time poring over pores! This can only make one even more self conscious when in reality, it’s something you would only fervently notice after you’ve been looking too long into a mirror – especially if it’s one of those backlit magnifying personal mirrors. Our pores are as innate as the type of our hair we have, and it would be best to embrace and accept that they make us who we are.
Our pores do become more visible with age. Our genes, external factors, and our body’s natural ageing process lead to reduced collagen, diminishing skin’s elasticity and thus making pores more obvious. However, it’s more of a change that only really becomes noticeable under intense scrutiny or if our skin has been particularly affected as a consequence of other more serious medical conditions. There is also a positive: those with more visible pores are more likely to have oily/combination skin, and this type of skin is much less susceptible to the wrinkling effects of ageing.
While it’s not realistic to reduce our pores, calling it a myth is not entirely accurate either. This is because there are approaches to make them appear less visible or obvious. These approaches should already be part of one’s everyday regime, such as cleansing, toning, and periodically exfoliating. Everyday cleansing and a weekly exfoliation (or a deep-cleansing mask as an alternative) – but not excessive cleansing – will rid your pores of dead skin cells, dirt, bacteria or excess oil, which can clog them and cause them to expand further.
Finally, let’s not forget that good make-up could also work wonders. The right combination of concealers, foundations and/or powders can cover and diminish the look of pores if one is still too self-conscious. In this approach however, it does become even more important to follow a cleansing routine to ensure make-up residues do not themselves lead to clogged skin pores.

Nice article. I have started to make sure that I keep up a good routine morning and night and it seems to have helped.

I'm not too plagued by clogging as I am an avid facial cleanser, but thru genetics I have quite large noticeable pores :o( I have always felt self conscious about them and tried a few remedies but I gave up. As your article pointed out makeup is a good defence and a great coverup if you can find the right products.
Just a question, does a primer help to reduce the appearance of pores??

Mine get clogged easily.. They're pretty big on the cheeks, just around the nose area.. It doesn't worry me too much though, can't do much about it so like the article said - embrace it :)

Mine don't really tend to get clogged, but they are very visible, unfortunately.

I find it really refreshing to read a professional opinion that says "embrace your flaws" first. Mr. Lee, I salute you! Though I sometimes worry over my pores, I've never once seen someone else and thought "oh my god look at the size of those pores!" so I try not to worry about my own too much. :)

I am like others on here, wouldn't it be great to actually get a product that really works and get rid of the creator pores. I have had them for years all through teenage onwards. I would be the first to get a product if it actually works and not just a cover up when wearing makeup

On the oiliest sections of my face, like my chin and forehead (and even below my ears!) seem to have pores that get clogged quite easily. But the drier, less sebaceous areas like my cheeks seem to have normal-like pores.

Yep, my pores are large and open (especially around my nose area) and get clogged very easily. I'm lucky enough not to suffer from lots of pimples but I get blackheads instead. Yuck

aww -Ii really wished there was a way that pores can be reduced but since they don't have muscles there is no way we can make their openings contract. I find -cone based primers work wonders but some people are irritated by silicone based products and cannot use it.

I have obvious ones from picking at my pimples when I was younger. I have been using estee lauders pore minimized which is seeming to work quite nicely

Thanks for the great article. I am fortunate as my pores do not clog easily, however I wholeheartedly agree with the advice to keep up one's skin regime. I do notice that my skin and pores look much clearer and more refined when I regularly exfoliate and keep up a healthy skin regime.

Yeah, my pores clog really easily and no matter how often I cleanse they never seem to be clean of dirt and dead skin cells. They are really obvious.
