Your summer skin care checklist is here

With the weather warming up there are a few things we update - often we switch to a fresher and lighter fragrance, we whip out the fake tan, to ensure our limbs are bronzed and ready to see the light of day and we get the sunscreen ready for those inevitable beach and pool days. One thing we are less likely to mix up, however, is our skin care routine. We spoke to Olay skin care expert, David Khoo, to learn exactly why and where we should be switching up our skin care routines in summer, the non-negotiable products we need and what we should be avoiding.

What actually changes for our skin when the weather warms up?
“Your skin will constantly respond to its surrounding environment and associated conditions,” says Khoo. “Among other things, the increase in temperature, may increase melanin production as a protective response to UV exposure.” Melanin is what gives your skin its colour, whether it is burnt or tanned. “The warmer weather [also] causes your skin to age at an increased rate. We know that UV radiation is the main cause of extrinsic skin ageing and that accumulated UV exposure causes cellular and molecular damage in the skin,” explains Khoo. “Over time, this damage can lead to dry or coarse skin, premature lines and wrinkles and a loss of skin’s elasticity.”
So what should we be doing in summer to keep our skin in it’s best shape?
“Using a moisturiser that contains SPF will combat the symptoms of dry, coarse skin as well as protecting against further damage,” says Khoo. With a global survey finding that only 18% of women use daily sunscreen or moisturiser with SPF, it seems an obvious thing to do but is often overlooked, he explains.
What are the non-negotiable products to include in your skin care routine this summer?
The first step is finding an effective cleanser. Excess sebum tends to be more of an issue in the summer, so a “good cleanser prepares your skin to absorb the nourishing ingredients it needs,” says Khoo. Another non-negotiable for summer is an antioxidant serum, such as Vitamin C, used in the morning, this will help protect the skin from free radicals and environmental damage, as well as helping correct pigmentation. At night time using a niacinamide serum can also help soothe and reduce inflammatory damage caused by UV exposure. Finally, finding a moisturiser with SPF is the crucial last step in a summer skin care routine, in the morning, and a restorative moisturiser at night.
Now, what should we be avoiding in summer?
The only thing Khoo recommends avoiding in summer is greasy sunscreens, “not because they don’t work, but because you may find them uncomfortable. If you find your sunscreen uncomfortable you will be less likely to apply and reapply as needed.”

I always change for the seasons, my skin is so much drier in the winter, but I always wear sunscreen all year round,

I would love to use a vitamin C serum, if only I could find on that doesn't irritate my skin...

Even the tiniest amount of vitamin C in a product will make my skin flaky. Sometimes it seems as if companies include vitamin C in almost everything, so it can be a tricky ingredient to avoid.

I'm in the same boat Chrystalage - Vitamin C serums either irritate me or cause my skin to break out in little spots. I can't win. :o(

Time to deal with the effects of greasy sunscreen on my face everyday! Better than premature wrinkles though.

I don't change my routine in summer! Maybe I should?! I hate skincare I never know what to do and what products, I'm not one to spend big $$ and I don't have time to put on like 5 products!

Me too. Also find the idea of using 15 products a day very tiring. I stick to a good serum and tinted face sunscreen.

Great sunscreen recommendations in the comments here! Currently using sunsense sensitive invisible, it's good except now that my skin has gotten darker from the sun, the whitecast is a lot more obvious.

Japanese Sun screen is my cult fave for summer... if anyone is going to Japan I recommend the Biore Sunscreen- it is so light on my skin so great for wearing daily.

Omg it's amazing isn't it. You can also buy it from blush stores in Sydney city. (Was so happy when I found it here) it's like twice the price here but still worth it.

Since trialling Invizible Zinc SPF sheer 50...I am a convert. Can not believe, just yesterday noticed that after initial shiny look, it dries completely matte on me! I thought I would never like this look, but man, falling in love. My pores look much better without 'glow'. Plus it blurres so much my pigmentation, kinda weird. Thought it was completely sheer, but , nope!

Hi Yohanna, being sheer, was that one shade to suit all? It sounds so good with the hot weather now here. How long did it take to dry?

For the 'gloss' to go away completely, I would say about half an hour. Mind you I have naturally shiny face, some oil production. There is the non tint version too. I got to trial either medium or light. Picked light knowing from past experience that these "BB" like creams in medium always have orange undertones
Yes, best part, i have huge pores, tend to sweat like mad all over (face included) so I tend to sweat out all sunscreens and chemical ones especially foam up in white colour . eeek.. This one stays put!

Oh yes those orange ones are ghastly and I have oilier skin too, so sometimes an hour later, I can rub all the product off and it just flakes off, looks terrible too. I think it's a long term commitment to finding tinted products in the right shade, oh and texture, some are thick, especially the BB creams and they just sit there on my skin and make everything look clogged up. Need a nice and light texture too!

This one feels as my skin. As if I have nothing on. After it sets in and dries out that is. Cool product. Wish we had full disclosure for all of the ingredients. As in long term use, I need to know if it has something that is not good for the body.
