How-to: wear pale pink lipstick

Pale pink. Musky pink. Baby pink. Or mauve, even. Call it whatever you wish, this lipstick hue is divine. And pretty. And wonderfully 60s-esque.
But how does one pull it off? It is rather different to your standard reds, corals, hot pinks and berries, after all. And considering this hue can sometimes be quite milky and have a (somewhat horrible) chalky, streaky kind of finish, donning this light pink pigment does require a little know-how.
So, follow these tips and you’ll definitely find yourself looking just as glorious as Leona Lewis while wearing this feminine hue…
PALE PINK LIPSTICK TIP #1: always conceal or prime
One of the main reasons pale lipstick can look streaky is because the pigment of your natural lips shows through. To combat this, simply apply a thin layer of concealer - or primer - on your lips using a lip brush, before filling in your pout with a nude lip liner. Doing so will also make the colour of the lipstick stand out more.
PALE PINK LIPSTICK TIP #2: apply two coats, separately
Apply one coat of your chosen pale/musky/baby pink lipstick, and then blot it with a tissue, focusing the pressure on the outer rim of your lips. (This will help prevent that ugly build-up of product on the edge of your lips.) Then, apply your second and final coat of lipstick. This will not only make your lipstick last longer, but further prevent the colour from streaking.
PALE PINK LIPSTICK TIP #3: pair it with black winged eyeliner
Lighter lip hues can make fair skin look a little lost, but by adding a slick line of black liquid liner to your eyes, you’ll add extra definition. This trick also works wonders for darker skin tones, as Leona Lewis has so kindly demonstrated. Filling in your brows will also complete this face-framing make-up look.
PALE PINK LIPSTICK TIP #4: always enhance your complexion
Red, coral, berry and hot pink lipsticks instantly boost your skin’s appearance, but light pink hues? Not so much. Apply a baby pink or rosy coloured blush to help breath life into your cheeks, and pop a dusting of powder illuminator over the top to ensure your skin has a wonderful warmth and glow.
Now you know the tricks to wearing this lipstick hue well, want to know which ones are approved by the bh team? These four are absolute gems…

This is such a beautiful colour but I don't think it suits people with pale skin because it washes out their complexion so much.

I actually like it when my natural lip colour comes through... it makes it look more natural and more me.

I love the look of this but I wonder if you don't need to have a slight tan to get away with it!

Thanks for the tips for bh. I was wondering why my pink lippie's never look as nice on me. I will have to give these tips a go now!

I think pale pink lips look great, but I don't think I can really pull it off, unfortunately. The Maybelline shade looks absolutely gorgeous!

These shades look amazing on medium or dark skinned gals but pale ol' me would look a little ghastly in the pale shades.

I actually don't think it looks good on the person in the picture (Leona Lewis?).

I agree this is a difficult colour to wear for many women although these hues are soooo feminine and pretty. I don't have any tips other than ensuring the colour suits you. No use wearing a colour that you like but doesn't enhance you.

I do love pale pink lipstick (especially MAC's Creme Cup) and luckily it suits me. It really only looks good on people with very pale skin and cool undertones though. It just looks wrong on those that are tanned.

Honestly, I don't think anyone looks good in this colour... It reminds me of little kids make up sets :P But to each their own.

I love the colour but tend to find wearing it on my face makes me look a bit sickly and washed out. I think light pink may be one for darker skinned girls

I have been looking for a nice pale shade of pink, something with a lot of pigment. Usually it looks great until I apply it on my lips and then it is just too opaque and practically nothing there.

I think you have to be a fresh young girl to wear this shade of pink

I always thought pale pink lippie would suit someone with cool skintone. I am slightly tanned and tried a pale pink lipstick, took me a while to get used to it, as I always wear bright red shades, which suit me better

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this colour so i bought a YSL lipstick a few years and it looked absolutely horrible. The lipstick became so streaky and patchy and i did everything in the world to try and fix it but nothing seemed to work. I wish I had these tips however I think I would have had the same affect :( Maybe I can try it again with one of these, the Loreal looks nice!

I love wearing pale pink lipstick. It looks nice and simple but can make a whole outfit tie together.

Lovely advice. I like the tip of adding a winged liner. The maybelline lippy looks great.

The last lippie is L'Oreal Infallible Le Rouge and I'm guessing its Perennial Pink. I love Infallible, stays put all day and the new Glam Shine Lip Carress isn't bad either. I'd have to amp up my blush and some bronzer as I'm really pale.

Love the Maybelline & L'Oreal lippy colours in the picture there. I do love this 'young' look but I'm less confident wearing that look as I'm not 'young anymore! Last thing on earth I want is to look like a mutton dressed up as lamb so I usually opt for a much, much paler pink than those these days and it's not quite as opaque either. Nice on her though!

I think it depends on your skin colouring, it suits Leona Lewis as she is more on the Darker Olive skin type, if your on the paler side then this colour can make you look washed out. Its a beautiful colour dont get me wrong but its not for every skin shade.

A choice I wouldn't normally make for almost every reason you state, but with a bit of work, maybe ill give it another go...
