Friday favourites: formal edition

We love sharing our favourite beauty products with you (let’s be honest, we have so many, it’d be greedy not to). And as we come to the end of the school year, we thought we’d cast our memories back to our very own school formals. For many of us, it was the first night we got all glammed up, and the first time trying beauty products that are still our favourites today.
bh's Vanessa
“My year 10 formal was the first time I ever used fake lashes (I chose the Ardell Individual Lashes). It was very similar to when you first get your eyebrows done and no one really notices that much, but you feel like you look like a whole different person! I loved them so much I tried to wear them to school the next day, but my teacher said I had to take them off because they were distracting me from learning...”
bh's Beth
“A lot of my friends got spray tans for our formal but I was too chicken, so I used Dove Summer Glow Gradual Self Tan Body Lotion. It gave me just a hint of a tan without making me look orange, which means I can look back on the photos and not be too embarassed.”
bh's Katia
"I could talk you through my make-up look and perfume of choice, but the true hero product was Nude by Nature's Mineral Finishing Veil. It was a stinking 40 degrees on my formal day, and this setting powder kept my 'face' (which I had professionally done, of course) in place from the pre-party to the after-after-party! It also sparked my obsession with mineral make-up."
bh's Kelly
“Eight years on, and I still look back at my formal hair and make-up and think, ‘not bad, not bad at all’. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the questionable 70s backdrop and my date’s oversized grey suit. The key thing about my ‘look’ – that still hasn’t change – is my love for bronzed, glowing skin and my product of choice is the same in 2014 as it was in 2006. St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse has been my favourite self-tanner for almost a decade now, thanks to the dark yet natural result I get. I slathered it on back then, I slather it on now, and ask me again in eight years and I’ll probably still be slathering it on then!”
bh's Sam
“I had never worn eyeliner before my year 10 formal. Admittedly I may have gone a tad overboard, but I loved the way it made my blue eyes stand out. To this day I still use Maybelline New York Master Precise Liquid Eyeliner. It’s the perfect easy-to-use liner for when you’re just starting out!

I went to my formal without makeup. I only started wearing makeup just after when I was about seventeen.

You all look so young & cute! No photographic evidence of my Year 12 Formal exists (that I have access to, in any case). I assume that may be for the best ;-) My overwhelming recollection of that night was that I'd had a HUGE fight with my bf as he "wasn't going to wear a tux and uncomfortable leather shoes for anyone" - so I went with my bestie instead! I think there was cat-eyed liner and vampy lipstick involved, at any rate.

These are all such cute photos! I love how they made a real effort to look great. From what I can remember the only think I did was put some black eyeliner on - well, it was back in the eighties!

Don't have a favourite formal product as my makeup was done by my Mum. I didn't have a clue about makeup then and tbh, my Mum didn't (and still doesn't, tbh) care all that much about makeup either! That's why I ended up with a tan face & pale body for my Year 12 formal lol...ugh...my Year 10 formal look was better overall.

When I was in high school you only had a formal in 6th form (year 12 these days). I left in 4th form (year 10). I did have a boyfriend in year 12 so got to go to one at least. So different these days. My kids both had double formals.......the expense is amazing.

I used to use the dove gradual tanner lotion back when I was a teen :) For my year 12 formal I had to have white eyeliner, I got my make-up done at Napoleon perdis, and I remember saying, "don't forget to put white eyeliner on my water line", and then before I left I redeemed the cost of the makeover with the same white eyeliner and a lipgloss. I still purchase that same white eyeliner today, it's one of favourites. I just like how it makes my brown eyes stand out.
