How-to: flaunt your freckles
I’m not a fan of faux freckles, but I do think real ones are utterly gorgeous. They’re cute, sweet and add a hint of sun-kissed glow to any face. Not convinced? Just look at Victoria’s Secret Angel Erin Heatherton. She’s got her sprinkling of sweet spots on display and she looks adorable.
But, and this is a big BUT, there’s one key factor as to why Erin looks so darn gorgeous and that reason is this: she’s allowed her freckles to shine through by using a sheer, glowy foundation. Yep, heavy, cakey, thick foundation is clearly a freckle’s worst enemy.
Got freckles? Want to know how to make them look grand like Erin’s? Here are a few handy make-up tips…
Tip #1: As mentioned above, even out your skin tone – but don’t cover your freckles – with a tinted moisturiser, BB cream or sheer foundation. A dusting of translucent powder down the t-zone will control any signs of shine.
Tip #2: If you’re after some colour on your cheeks, opt for a crème blush. They’re sheer and give a glowy finish, so you’ll get your natural flush of colour without hiding even one teeny tiny freckle.
Tip #3: Got a zit that needs its redness concealed? No probs. Reaching for a mineral concealer is smart, as they reflect the light – creating a luminous finish –while hiding your pimple at the same time. Smart.
Tip #4: While we’re on the subject of glowing skin, illuminators are a freckled lass’ best friend. Apply one to the high points of your face – cheekbones, brow bones, tip of your nose and Cupid’s bow – or even mix it in with your sheer foundation for a super-fresh finish.
Tip #5: Don’t be afraid of bronzer. You may think applying brown powder to your brown-esque freckles is a bad idea, but it actually helps to create a uniform finish, while also giving a sun-kissed glow. Just don’t go overboard, OK?
Final note: Freckles are technically a build-up of melanin on the skin, which develops as a result of sun exposure (and sometimes genetics). As we’re not in the field of promoting sun baking, everyone – whether you’ve got freckles or not – should be wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen on a daily basis. So please continue to slather on the white goodness that is SPF, beauties. No buts!
