5 ways to help dry and brittle nails

If your nails are looking a little worse for wear, they’re probably in need of some serious TLC. Dry and brittle nails can occur for a number of reasons including diet, not properly caring for your nails, and bad habits. Once upon a time, getting weak nails back into shape was a long and dull process that usually involved sacrificing your favourite polish for stronger tips but thankfully, that’s no longer the case.
That’s because the new Sally Hansen Color Therapy range contains a special argan oil formula, to care for your nails as you colour them. The system consists of three steps: a nourishing Nail Polish, an ultra-glossy Top Coat for extended wear and a Nail & Cuticle Oil to restore and rejuvenate. Pair the system with the right dietary and lifestyle adjustments, and your nails will be back in shape before you know it.
Here are a few pointers to get your started on your way to stronger, healthier nails.
#1 Protect from harsh chemicals
The first step to restoring weak nails is protecting them from harsh chemicals. Always wear gloves when you’re doing household chores such as washing the dishes or handwashing clothes. Alcohol can be drying for nails, so avoid alcohol-based hand sanitisers, and instead choose a moisturising hand wash.
#2 Take a break from gel nails
There’s nothing worse than giving yourself a fresh manicure only for it to chip the next day. Although a gel manicure can be a tempting alternative, they can also be dehydrating and weaken your nails over time. If your nail beds are already in bad shape, you should probably skip gels altogether. If you’re a regular gel enthusiast, try taking a break for a few months, and monitor the condition of your nails to see if they improve. Sally Hansen Color Therapy Nail Polish has up to 10 days’ wear, so you won’t need to compromise on the longevity of your manicure.
#3 Eating right for healthy nails
If your nails are brittle and breaking, you might want to take a look at your plate. Lack of proper nutrition can lead to brittle, weak nails. Adding more protein to your diet is important because your nails are primarily made of keratin, a type of protein that gives nails their strength. For longer, stronger nails, try including more lean meat, eggs, seafood and soybeans in your diet.
It’s also worth considering biotin: A 2007 study published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology found that a daily dose of biotin helps improve brittle nails. If your nails are really bothering you, It might be worth a shot.
#4 Choose your polish carefully
You might think that caring for brittle nails involves taking a break from your polish, but thanks to the new Sally Hansen Color Therapy Nail Polish, you can care for your nails while wearing colour. It contains argan oil, resulting in nourishment and instant moisture for healthier looking nails. With this polish there’s no need for a base coat, which allows the formula to directly nourish your nails.
There are 14 shades to choose from, including on-trend magenta and a saturated blue jewel tone. For a pretty pop of colour or an understated finish, there are plenty of pink and neutral shades to try. So whether you prefer a bright red or a blushed nude, you can wear luminous colour while caring for your nails. The Sally Hansen Color Therapy Top Coat contains the same argan oil infused formula and locks in your polish for a fade-proof, chip-resistant finish.
#5 Cuticle care
It’s easy to forget about your cuticles, but a cuticle oil is a must-have to keep the skin moisturised, and to avoid dry skin and hangnails. The Sally Hansen Color Therapy Nail & Cuticle Oil is the final step to completing and maintaining your manicure. Massage the oil into your cuticles daily to instantly revive the look of your nails. As a bonus, the massage may also help to stimulate the nail beds, which can encourage nails to grow stronger and healthier.
So, now that you can treat your nails while still rocking your favourite colourful shade, there’s no excuse for letting dry and brittle nails get the best of you.

Lots of different oils, even olive oil, used on the hands as a hand cream really helps nails to be strong. And I also find they're kept well nourished and soft

A couple of years ago, my nails were getting so dry and brittle, splitting. During some routine blood work, it was revealed I had a low thyroid, and apparently that is a symptom of it. As soon as I was put on thyroid medication, my nails went back to normal. So if you think your nails are more dry and brittle than they should be, get your thyroid checked to rule that out as a cause of that issue.

I cannot recommend Sally Hansen Color Therapy range enough. My nails were quite damaged after using a peel off nail product that stubbornly refused to peel off. My nails now look super glossy and I love the fact that the nail polish is self levelling and hides any imperfections perfectly.

Hmm I saw an article in mag today, about the age of certain celebs facial skin compared with their hands. I don't know if the images were legit but their hands looked years and even decades older than their faces. Not enough attention is given to protecting and treating our hands.

I have tried so many nail products! I have weak/brittle nails that chip and tear very easily, and so have tried several hardeners to no avail, and they never seem to stay on my nails for long, peeling off within hours :( I am currently using a serum and oil from revitanail which seem to be helping.

Just picked this up at Priceline today really cannot wait to use it! My nails are always so weak and brittle I've noticed eating healthy and taking some vitamins have helped a little. Time to also go topical in conjunction!

I have always had severely dry everything and for the past 20 years have lived in a harsh dry climate subjected to aircon constantly indoors. So my job requires me to constantly wash my hands possibly 100 times a day. My nails are tragic. When I go on holidays i pamper them and try to daily give TLC then I come back to reality and start all over again. I resorted a few years ago to try shellac nails which have completely wrecked them. They are now almost beyond redemption. I have bought many products but most of them have vapors that my husband can't stand around him, even if I use them while he is at work, he can still smell it when he comes home. I did buy some Sally Hansen last trip to the coast so maybe its time to give them a try. Fingers crossed. I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I even bought a gel nail care kit but don't seem to find the time to use it.

The Sally Hansen Nail and Cuticle therapy in the new Colour Theory range is excellent. The bottle doesn't look anything like the photo above that seems to be promoting the product. The range has been a complete winner for me.

This article really relates to me and the one tip here that I have not yet tried is the daily dose of biotin. I agree it sounds like it will be worth a try, because I've had little success throughout the years so hopefully an oral supplement might just give my nails the additional boost they need to strengthen and grow.

Id like to share something I think people don't realize and as having been a nail tech for years I saw it all the time. Careful when choosing and using nail hardeners! Some hardeners are all formaldehyde which works great as a preservative and does make nails stronger but after a while can make them brittle so these nice long nails you've grown after a few weeks start snapping and you don't know why. So I recommend doing some research before buying. Also can't stress enough the importance of a good nail and cuticle oil. I always loved solar oil by creative nail design as the molecules are small enough to pentrate into the nail bed. Many times nails just have an imbalance of moisture. You'd be surprised how many clients I got to ditch hardener for a good oil and they ended up with gorgeous healthy looking nails!

I'm hoping to buy the Sally Hansen cuticle oil tomorrow - the nail polish and top coat trial was an incredible success for me. Hopefully the polishes will be part of Priceline's 40% off cosmetics sale. This trial really did have me deciding to use nail polish after not doing so for years.
