I got skincare for Christmas. I am very gratefeul. It'st just funny as I already have so much due to points from here and from my own purchases. I hope it doesn't go off sitting in my cupboard.
Beauty items lasts a while if not open. If it has natural / organic ingredients its best to use it soon anyway . What was the gift ?
I think as long as it has'nt been opened or a seal broken it should be fine. After it's been opened it can get bacteria in it or just dry up.
Perhaps someone has a birthday coming up and you could re-gift it to someone else??? It won't go off for ages... Most things last longer than the "best before" anyways...
Maybe look at using this skincare next and using the non organic products after?!
I had a L'Oreal night cream in my cupboard for over 12mths and it works perfectly. Actually I love it & am thinking about purchasing it again.
You could try put it in the swap thread Perth Chick if you where looking for something else ie makeup/body/hair stuff?!
Can you donate it if the product is unopened to a charity ie a womens shelter, lifeline , vinnies or give it to a friend if you don't want it.
Yes, I had considered it.
Like everyone has said, I dont think it will as long as it's not open and sealed, you would be surprised.
I am also in the same (lucky) boat. I have so much skincare, from my own stash and from attending bh events this year (which I was so fortunate to attend) I am a little worried about not being able to use it all, I hate to allow stuff to go to waste.
Products which contain mostly naturally derived ingredients have a shorter shelf life around 6 months, regardless of whether you open it or not. Facial oils must be used ASAP. Anything with unstable ingredients like pure vitamin C (ascorbic acid) must be used ASAP and also stored in the fridge to prevent from going rancid. Plus it's the hot season right now so it's going to "cook" faster, depending on where you store it.
General rule of thumb for other products is 1-2 years, regardless of whether you open it or not.
I gift items to friends and co-workers, but not if the product is inching too close to an expiry date.
This isn't food (and even then I wouldn't be tampering with my health that way) so "best before" is most definitely best before. Ingredients degrade and decay and, within a formulation, they lose their original properties which further means they no longer play an expected role in a formulation. This can mean all sorts of nasty reactions or, if you're lucky, it might just pill on your skin when you try to use it.
Also beware of sunk cost fallacy, which is normally an economic theory, but it applies here. Simply put, a fear of waste causes you to put yourself in a position to experience further waste. You could get sick, experience a bad reaction, etc. which means further loss in terms of recovery time and money spent (e.g. to purchase more products to heal the sickness).
Agree I think if it's not opened it should be OK> I've even had products and still used them past the use within timeframe after opening with no issues.
Same here, I use different one for morning and night simultaneously. End year sales make me stock up quite a bit of skincare too!
I always have free samples sitting in my cupbaord.
If you still have not decided what to do with your skin care products, you can donate them to a great charity in Sydney called The Beauty Bank. If you do not live in Sydney, you can post products to them:
There is a group in Melbourne that holds a yearly collection of beauty products for women that have escaped domestic violence. Collections are usually held each November:
If you received any facial oils as part of your skin care present, you might be interested in their shelf life. Here is a great website which lists the shelf life of carrier oils:
This shower gel has a smooth texture to it. It was like baby powder, fairy floss, type of scent very soft and gorgeous. The lather is out of this world you only need the tiniest amount.
I love this Mascara. It adds the most beautiful volume to my lashes. It does not flake or smudge or clump on me.
I usually have very oily skin but lately I've had dermatitis on localised areas of my face - mostly my forehead, sides of the nose, ear lobes and below the brow bone.
