DIY beauty recipes
I'm not sure if there is a thread for this but I am a massive fan of DIY beauty and want to start a post to share recipes and tips.
Do you have a recipe that your grandmother has passed down or maybe you have discovered something you are happy to share?

Definitely feels effective
This product is based on plant stem cells! Such a great concept. Andalou is an American company, cruelty free and vegan, so good! Packaging is simole. And clean looking.

I thought that was ages ago and it was done by Chinese knock-offs of well known brands (which they sell onto major sites and grey market importers) so people think it is the genuine thing but it’s not.
What a great forum.
I keep trying various DIY stuff too and so far this one is my favorite -
Shea butter - 3/4th cup Coconut or Olive oil - 1/4 cup Almond oil - 4 tbsp Bee wax - 1 tsp
Melt all these in a double boiler arrangement - preferably a big round bowl Bee wax would be the last one to melt
Let the mixture cool down overnight or pop in the fridge for couple of hours.
Add - Vitamin E oil - 1 tbsp Essence oil of your choice - 10 drops (I like lavender and tea tree)
Whip for 10 minutes
Add a splash of rose water and some aloe gel (optional) - emulsifying with some water makes it lighter
Whip again until light and fluffy. shelf life - 4 to 6 months. Just avoid touching with wet hands - I like to use a small wooden spoon
I use it as -
Body butter (specially during winter) Hair mask (apply and wrap around a warm damp towel for best results) Make up remover balm (massage face and wipe away with warm wet hand towel) and to make Salt Scrub - just mix a good mineral salt with it and use it. I haven't tried mixing and keeping it like that ever.
I read somewhere that you can also add zinc in the mix for mild sunscreen version - but haven't tried it.
wow This sounds so luxurious having your own handmade body butter . where do u buy bees wax from?
Used to buy from a friend's friend as she was running home business but now they've moved out from Sydney. But I think you can easily get it at a health food store. Definitely saw some options at Mr Vitamin store.
I posted a supplier link early in this thread if you want to go down that path!
I buy beeswax off Ebay, it last me for ages because I only make lip balm. I have some red pigment powder that I put in half of it to make a coloured lipgloss. i can't really remember the 'recipe' just a bunch of natural oils (especially coconut)in the beeswax. It lasts me for ages, so many companies really skimp on beeswax in their products.
Here is another DIY sheet mask recipe that is both brightening and hydrating.
1 compressed sheet mask
20g distilled water
2g glycerine
1g hyaluronic acid serum (TO or Aldi).
1g The Ordinary (TO) Niacinamide serum/ 0.005g niacinamide powder
1 drop TO Ferulic acid serum
1 drop Kakadu Plum (Gubinge) extract
1 drop Liquorice extract
1 drop Bearberry extract
1 drop Vitamin E oil
1 small drop TO Sea Buckthorn Oil
1 small drop CO2 extracted rosehip oil or regular rosehip oil.
1/4 tsp Emulsifier such as lecithin
Directions
In a small bowl, mix oils and emulsifier and heat gently over double boiler or in microwave until dissolved
Add water slowly and whisk until incorporated, then add serums, glycerine and extracts and continue to whisk
Dip compressed mask into serum and soak until expanded.
You may find you need to add a little more water to allow the mask to expand.
Apply to face for 20 minutes.
Enjoy!
Hey Beauties, I found a good D.I.Y recipe for a clay cleansing bar, thought I would share with you ladies!
Ingredients: 40 g (1.41 oz) white kaolin clay 18 g (0.6 oz) powdered/ground oats* 1 g (1/2 tsp) alfalfa powder (optional, for color & a nutrient boost) 30 g (1.06 oz) cocoa butter 15 g (0.52 oz) aloe butter (or another soft butter such as shea, avocado) 12 g (0.42 oz) oil of your choice ** optional – 1 tsp (3.5 g) Phytocide Elderberry OS *** (oil soluble natural preservative)
Directions:
Weigh the cocoa butter, aloe butter, oil of your choice, and alfalfa powder into a heatproof jar or container.
Place the jar down into a small saucepan containing a few inches of water, forming a makeshift double boiler.
Place the pan over a medium-low burner to heat.
Once the butters are melted, thoroughly stir in the Phytocide Elderberry OS, if using.
Next, stir in the clay and powdered oats.
Mix well and remove from heat.
Spoon the hot mixture immediately into a silicone mold, or molds.
Place the mold in your refrigerator for a few hours, or until the bar is completely cool and hardened.
Remove and transfer to a tin or other storage container
Thanks Amazeballs16!
I'll check whether New Directions Australia or Escentials of Australia stock the phytocide otherwise I may have to order it off Making Cosmetics.
Unfortunately Lotioncrafter no longer send low value goods to Australia since the revised GST rules came in.
Check out www.bulksupplements.com for some raw materials as I purchased from them with no issue!
