How you buy makeup
How you buy makeup
Hi everyone!! I am currently doing my dissertation at uni on the technological advances within the beauty industry but to start with I just need to know how people buy makeup and the process they go through so I just have a few questions that need answering so if you could go into as much detail as you'd like that would be amazing and so helpful for me!
- Do you prefer to shop for makeup in-store or online? Why?
- Do you read reviews or watch Youtube videos before making a new purchase? If yes, tell me why?
- Are you more likely to trust a review of a product from a friend/family member or from an 'influencer'? why?
- Lastly, could you tell me in a quick bullet point form, how you typically go about buying a new product? e.g. watch a video, go into store to get colour, then buy online
Thank you in advance and just to let you know the answers will be used in my report so if you'd like to be anonymous or remove your answers at anytime then just email me at: teigan.wheeler2016@my.ntu.ac.uk

Hi teiganwheeler,
Happy to help!
1) I prefer to buy online as easier for me less running around and can compare prices to get the best price. In saying that though IF there is a sale instore I can't help myself LOL
2) I always read reviews before purchasing now because I'm so fussy! If the items doesn't have 4 or 5 stars from majority of people then I won't bother
3) I don't follow any influencer's- all the reviews I look at are on BH only or from friends/family as I trust them more. I find an influencer will get paid to promote the product so wouldn't really trust them tbh.
4) * Google product * Go on supplier website * Read reviews on BH * Compare prices online/checkout sales * Buy online
Hope this helps!
Hi thank you so much for your help! Have a lovely day:)
Am I the only person thinking that if this is a legitimate university approved research project then an ethical approval number should be included as well as other details and not just a simple email address? Especially given that the info will be used in reports (what types of reports? Shared with who?)....
The email address is a university in UK.
Another reason to be a bit suss about this.
Hi yes I go to university at Nottingham Trent in the UK. I used this site as it seemed to be the most popular beauty sharing forum and I felt I would receive the most informed answers from a wide audience.
Hi The information given will be used for my dissertation as stated. For online research we only have to tell the consumer what the information will be used for as it is impossible to get signatures from everyone, and I disclosed what you would need to do if you wanted to remove your answers (what lecturers have said). There is an option to go anonymous and email if there are any queries but it will only be read by whoever marks my work at the end of the year. It is only a little information to help me with secondary research so no reason to not be a legitimate university approved research project.
Suss for sure!!!
Do you prefer to shop for makeup in-store or online? Why?
I prefer in store as I like to see exactly what i am getting and I like to have it now rather then tomorrow but im like that with anything and not just makeup. I will order online if it is impossible for me to get to a store during a sale but this is very rare.
Do you read reviews or watch Youtube videos before making a new purchase? If yes, tell me why?
Not so much for makeup..No. For things like skincare yes...I will check bh for reviews because i trust these woman here to give their honest opinion.
Are you more likely to trust a review of a product from a friend/family member or from an 'influencer'? why?
I trust the woman here at bh. The ones I know and the ones that take part in the forums and the reason is as stated above that I know I can trust that they will give their honest thoughts on a product where as popular bloggers can often be paid for their articles which I feel has to sway them to the positive side.
Lastly, could you tell me in a quick bullet point form, how you typically go about buying a new product? e.g. watch a video, go into store to get colour, then buy online
Browse store, make my choice, purchase
Thank you so much for your help! :)
You are most welcome. Good luck with your Uni studies.
OK, teigan, since you've only got my username, I'm game.
• I notice a new trend: on the street, in a Bh article or a Youtube video & wonder if it would suit me
• I examine my stash of products to see if I can use something I own in a different way.
• If I decide I want to buy a product, I read reviews here on multiple brands of similar products, favouring Australian-made items. Sometimes I also Google the item & check various brands' websites.
• I narrow my list of products & swatch those items in-store to further narrow my list.
• When I decide on an item, I go home & wait for a sale (I'm a tight-@r$#, haha!)
• I keep checking online for sales, then go shopping in-store. Sometimes I buy my 2nd or 3rd choice if the price is good. I'll buy online as a last resort.
Thank you for your help, appreciate it! :)
if it’s a drugstore product I’ll just risk it and impulse buy in store during my weekly shop (particularly if it’s on sale like 40% off which happens regularly)
if it’s a higher end product I will check ingredients on cosdna, read makeupalley reviews and watch several YouTube videos to get a wider opinion and also see the product in action
mostly I will buy online as there’s so many deals and coupons as sites are very competitive
Omg I give up trying to format this, it keeps changing what I type lol
Thanks so much for your help!
I prefer in-store for all base products (foundation, concealer, contour, bronzer) because I really need to see it on my skin and try it out first. For all other makeup products (eyeshadows, lipstick, highlighter etc), I prefer to buy online as it's usually cheaper and more convenient.
Yes. I read heaps of reviews and watch a lot of Youtube vids on a product before buying. I don't buy a lot of makeup so when I do, I try to make sure as much as possible that it is going to work for me.
I trust anyone who has the same skin type and tone to me, be it a family/friend or influencer. I'm more sceptical when it comes to trusting an influencer though, since they're usually paid to promote, so will usually do some extra research on the product used by an influencer before I commit to buy.
See a product on instagram/facebook or advised by friend/family, watch youtube videos and read online reviews, if it's a foundation or concealer I will go instore to try shades, then I'll research pricing to figure out best place to buy, buy online (as it's usually the cheapest), though I'll buy instore if there is a good gift with purchase or other deal happening
Goodluck with your paper!
Thank you for the help:)
