Has anyone had Weight Loss Surgery?
Any tips or tricks?
Do you love it, hate it?
How has it worked for you?
Thank you xx
I've got no idea, P.L.E.
I have a couple of friends who have had this surgery fairly recently, they have had success with it.
One of them lost over 70kg, not all of it was from the surgery. She has had to have several operations after the inital weight loss surgery to remove a lot of excess skin from her arms, stomach and thighs which has left significant scarring.
She is also having surgery on her breasts to remove excess skin as well so it isn't always a case of just having the initial surgery for weight loss. Everyones journey is different. I'm happy that theirs has been successful.
My cousin had lap band surgery years ago, I don't even think they perform that type of surgery anymore and it was a disaster for her, she now has lots of health problems as a result of the surgery which was unsuccessful for her.
I've had a few friends and family do the sleeve... The results were great in they lost a lot of weight... BUT, the maintenance afterwards was really quite challenging for them... Vitamin and mineral deficiencies were high and some found it hard to digest foods... There are pros and cons with everything we do in life...
I'd be interested to know other peoples experiences also.
How long did recovery take?
Is the liquid diet before/after surgery manageable?
When were you able to eat again?
Are there any foods you have to avoid now?
How much weight did you loose?
Have you gained any weight back?
Don't have any personal experience but some family members have had this surgery (both sleeve and band).
From what I have seen, the recovery was relatively quick but both recovery and results were extremely dependent on the individual's approach.
I have one family member who got the sleeve mostly due to lack of self-control with eating - it did very little for them, and it's just ended up making them sick and miserable because they're not leaning into the lifestyle change... which also made recovery harder.
Another family member who really leaned into the careful portioning, healthy foods and knowing when to stop eating and they are doing great - lost a lot of weight and still very much enjoying life and smaller meals.
It wasn't a magic pill but it's basically a way to force your body to reject over-eating, from what I saw with them. They each have certain foods their body doesn't like anymore, very specific to the individual it seems.
My dentist told me that teeth that are moved, migrate back 'home' unless wired in place. I think weight is a bit like that. You tend to gain back eventually. I have a few friends who have had gastric surgery. All are a little lower than they started 10 years ago but not much. Gastric band lady had it removed as they never got ti right ands she kept throwing up. Gastric by pass (reversible) lost 20 or so kilos then regained 10 over time ands stayed there. She is happy with that but it comes with some sudden bouts of gastric, maybe a few times a year. I have no idea why.
I know quite a few people that have and EVERY single one put the weight back on. It worked initially but they then reverted back to their old habits and piled the weight back on which is a waste in my opinion.
I know this is going to sound quite harsh but I think people look at this as a "quick fix". Personally I think people should change their eating habits first & exercise, slowly and it will take a while don't expect results overnight.
Even if its only by walking at first and cutting out sugary stuff like coke etc that will make a difference. Small steps so its not a massive shock to your body and something that you can manage as well.
Once you get yourself into a good routine you gradually eat smaller portions/ cut out more junk & maybe do some weight training etc as well and walking for example you will figure it out as you go along.
No point in getting the surgery if you cannot change your habits first- in the end you may not even need the surgery if you get into good habits. And don't weigh yourself that is your worst enemy! You will notice changes by the way your clothes fit and that is a good indicator.
I know of six people who have had weight loss surgery and all have lost a tremendous amount of weight. So far they have managed to keep it off. One friend actually had half of her stomach removed. It cost her about $20,000 (no health fund) but in the space of six months she is half the size she used to be. I know she in particular had to go to a psychologist prior to having it done to be assessed. Directly following the operation, what she was allowed to eat was mushed up food (think cooked meat run through a food processor & made into a shake) for a period of time.
What I find really weird is that some of the people I know who have had weight loss surgery seem to drink a lot of alcohol. I have been told that something happens where they can drink more without getting a hang over (don't know if this is true for everyone).
Wow!! Thanks so much for all of your feedback, I really appreciate it. I think I have a lot to think about xx
