Ingrown Toenail
Ingrown Toenail
Hi guys! Just wondering if anyone has any tips to prevent ingrown nails? Lately my big toe is so prone to them. I have pedicures & she cuts it out but oh man it is painful!! & it comes back! I've been googling but have had no success so far. If you have any suggestions I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Regular buyer for a long time.
Im stuck buying this product literally. I used it when my children were babies and now there a bit older and understand they no bath, cream, then bed. No cream = no bed for 3 very angry toddlers.
Smooth cream that doesn’t feel too heavy
This moisturiser has a lovely smooth texture and glides onto my skin beautifully. I found it left my skin feeling soft and supple and it also wears well under makeup.

Hi Belindarella,
owch - ingrown toenails are the worst! In my experience, one of the best tips for preventing them is to make sure you aren't cutting your toenails too short - so maybe watch out for this next time you get a pedicure!
Here's an article you may find useful as well:

I hope this helps!

I like to keep my toenails short, so I've had the problem (mildly) on occasion. Usually the nail simply grows out, past the painful spot.
Once I had this problem & the nail cut into the skin & became infected. I had to have the toenail completely cut out under local anaesthetic at the doctors. This was relatively simple, but I make sure not to cut my toenails too short at the sides now. Trimming them too close has always been the problem for me. I haven't even come close to having this problem since I stopped cutting them SOOO short.
I've struggled with them for years, particularly on my big toes. It is one of my big fears to have to have them removed surgically, so I'm trying to not let it get that bad! I've learned that I need to keep them a bit longer than I used to cut them in the past, whatever length you can have where it is just slightly longer than the toe itself. I cut mine as straight across as I can, even though it is mighty tempting to cut them round to get rid of large side areas. I've been having a bit of trouble with my smaller toes lately, unfortunately I think it's the shoes I now wear to work, but I'm forcing myself not to buy new ones until I find a new job (but that's unrelated, haha!)
Don't worry about surgical removal Beauty_Jem, I just had local anaesthetic at the doctor's office. It was no drama at all, so don't put up with it if you're in pain. Leaving a bit of length at the sides definitely prevents the problem.
Misfortun8 looks like I will be having mine done now! They will give anaesthetic & "slice" a small piece of nail from each side & seal it so it doesn't come back! Is that what you had? If so.. any tips? Meanwhile it's expensive!! Dang!!
I got mine done at my local doctor's office, cheaply. They gave me local anaesthetic then took off the entire nail! I was warned to be careful as it grows back, because it might grow back ingrown, but I made sure to cut or file a rounded edge on the nail as it grew. It was so many years ago now, but I remember that it grew back just fine.
I had my big left toe nail operated on under general anaesthetic 14 years ago and they cut 1 cm above my nail bed, scrubbed it so it was damaged it so then it doesn't grow back. That night it felt like my toe was on fire so that's why I haven't rushed back. My doctor cut it out numerous times in the chair but it got infected and never, ever got better so I did the knocked out in hospital.
So now my right foot is ingrown. I have been dealing with this ingrown toenail for a couple of years now. It has fully grown out but the nail now digs in because that is what it has been doing for the last 2 years so it doesn't know any better.
So I found this forum and I now have an emla patch on and I am getting ready to trim the side down. I'm going to pray or what I think that will work that it helps. I have no infection present so fingers crossed!
Holy crap Sparkle! Ouch!
M8 you saved me!!!
So I had the emla patch on for an hour and my toenail scissors had been in the disinfectant. Got searching around and clicked on the link Beth had left and found your comment about putting cotton under the toenail!!!So off came the patch, toe was numb so all good there, jumped in the shower to soften the nail. I grabbed an ear bud, pulled the end off it and shoved it in!! No pain and it stayed in all night.
I had read about this technique but I had forgotten, so thank you for the reminder:). I remember my doctor telling me to pull the nail up when I watched tv so it didn't grow back in.
Fingers crossed because ingrown toenails suck!!
My son (now 22) had an ingrown toe nail problem on his left foot - he was always wearing school shoes or sports shoes - hates thongs so his feet would never breathe.
After many infections his GP referred us to a general surgeon who was wonderful. An elderly gent who'd had the problem himself and said it needed to be fixed and best to do the other later on.
All went well with the left big toe (he was 15) but a year later the right big toe flared up - so back we went.
Had no problems since - worth it.
Kassalee, I was in and out, awake all in 10 minutes! I should of had them both done but the right wasn't a problem back then:( I have had a lot of ops but this toe burnt like crazy for 24 hours. I didn't think it would but obviously the bone scrubbing is full on. I stupidly told them I didn't need pain killers that if I needed anything I had panadol!! Dumb!!
The local at the doctors hurts more than just cutting it out with nothing. I think I had a ring block (bloody painful) twice and then 3 times with nothing and nothing was better. I should of just used an emla patch but I don't know if they had them at the chemist back then. It was so infected for months, hot red and pus( gross), even the sheet hurt touching it. Anyway the only thing that helped was the hospital trip.
I am hoping M8's cotton trick works this time.
Ouch!!!! All of this thread is freaking me out! I've not heard of this cotton trick before! Re Emla patch.. I was told it's not done anymore.. before I pay a thousand dollars (yes I have two toes to be done)?to podiatrist I think I will go talk to a GP.
Wait! I misunderstood what the Emla patch is.. just googled it. I withdraw my above Emla comment. I thought it was when the podiatrist puts a brace type patch on top of the nail to encourage it to grow more straight across the toe instead of such a curve that digs into the toe.
That is hilarious Belindarella, I am seriously killing myself laughing. It numbs the area so you can't feel a thing. I will let you know how it goes but I have had in since last night and I can press my toe down and it doesn't hurt. Long hail queen M8!! ps: my toe nail was long and grown out but it was digging in the side of my toe so fingers crossed :)
Haha sparkle 77! Please let me know how it turns out. My toenails are so small & my toe is very "fleshy" so it is inevitable according to the last podiatrist I saw. Weird that it's only an issue now that I'm in my thirties though.. my toes have been this way since I was born! So weird! I am finding hard to trust the podiatrist. Looking forward to hearing the outcome. Thanks!
So it has been approximately 4 weeks since I started lifting the ingrown toe nail up with cotton wool. My nail was long but because it was ingrown for so long it was making the side of my toe bleed. So I was attempting to flatten it out with the cotton wool.
I worked out that the best cotton to use was a cut off cotton bud minus the plastic tip inside. I used toenail clippers to cut it off and then pulled to cotton off the end, rolling it back into a little ball. Pulled the corner of my nail up and pushed it up as far as I could but I also made sure it went under the side of my nail to stop the nail cutting in.
I am pleased to say it has fixed the problem!!! Well worth a try ladies, I have had this problem for a couple of years so I am over the moon!
Yay M8 for reminding me!
No worries Sparkle! I'm glad you're going good now. I have to remember not to cut my toenails too short, so make sure you don't make that mistake & you probably won't have this happen again.
M8 you are right. My big toe nails curl up slightly so I can't leave them too long or they become sore from the pressure of my shoes. I have to concave cut them so the corners are longer.
I'm so happy that I didn't have the doctor cut it out or I would have been back to square one. The surgeon is the only way to go because it is permanent.
Oh wow! This is great news! I'm so happy for you Sparkle 77!! It must be painful pushing the cotton in eh? I have no idea how I would get it under my nail! Mine are jammed in at an almost vertical angle.. when I try to lift it it is excruciating & sometimes it even splits the nail making it even more difficult.
I found that as soon as the cotton was in, it took the pressure off straight away. You just push it under the painful corner by a tiny bit. The pointy end of a metal nail file is perfect to use.
That's right M8 Mine was really digging in and not just at the corner most of the side and it would bleed along there. Once I got the cotton under it I couldn't believe how good it felt.
If it is really painful just get an emla patch from the Chemist to numb it first and then shove it it as far as you can. My nail was long and but the end of it the white of my nail was half way down ( like a triangle ). I wish I could put pictures on here but it doesn't work from my phone( I am hopeless).
I highly recommend it, I am pain free after 2 years!!
Oh, on a side note the other day in yoga when in belly down savasana the teacher thought it would be nice to massage my feet with her feet & she stood on my toes & I almost killed her! I let out a little cry & said please don't!
Must toughen up & do something about this!
I'm trying not to laugh, but when you've got a sore toe - Aargh! I reckon I'd have cried out too!
Ok.. you two have inspired me Sparkle 77 & misfortune8! I'm doing it tomorrow! I have the day off so it's perfect! So I remove the cotton part of a cotton tip & shove it under the offending area with my metal nail cleaner thingy.. I feel I will be earning a glass of wine for doing this!
Dang! I would love to see photos! I will probably google it but I'm once again freaking out at the prospect of what I may see with that type of google search! Haha!
