5 post-workout rewards
You’re sweaty, tired and your bum feels like it’s about to fall off. You’re wondering why on earth you put yourself through these gruelling workouts when Michelle Bridges and her perfectly toned and healthy physique pops into your mind. Oh yeah, that’s why.
But some day’s thoughts just aren’t enough. It can be hard to continue with your workouts when the results aren’t exactly coming in hard and fast, so it can help to come up with a reward system to keep you going. Try treating yourself after every session with something relaxing and indulgent. Or for extra motivation, promise yourself a special reward for when you reach a new workout goal- like running for 5km without stopping or exercising three times in one week. And when I say reward I don’t mean chocolate, cake or greasy food. Here are some guilt-free ways to treat your body and mind after a workout:
An occasional massage is a great way to relax and heal your body after exercise. Besides feeling absolutely amazing, massage improves circulation, which will help to rid the body of any waste products that can accumulate when muscles are overworked. They’re also great for relieving stress and tightness. You don’t have to spend money on a professional one either, simply asking your partner or friend for a quick post-workout massage will benefit your body.
These can be movie tickets for sticking to your workout routine all week or even concert tickets for a big achievement like running a half marathon. It’s important to still make time for things you enjoy and have something to look forward to when you’re struggling your way through a spin class.
Having a relaxing bath is an inexpensive and easy way to treat your body in the comfort of your own home. Light some candles and pour in some muscle relaxing salts like AHAVA Dead Sea Natural Bath Salt. Take in a book or your iPod and don’t emerge until you’re well and truly Zen.
Shopping is a therapy in itself but shopping for new clothes because your old ones are too big? Now that’s the ultimate reward. Try putting a little bit of money away every time you workout. Even if it’s only a dollar for every time you exercise, if this is five times a week you’ll end up with $100 per month. Buying new workout clothes or runners is also a great reward, because not only do you get to add to your wardrobe but it’ll motivate you to exercise more.
Drinking a cup of herbal tea is a simple yet effective way to treat your body after a strenuous workout. Most herbal teas have different medicinal effects, so you can pick one to suit your needs. Peppermint tea acts as a muscle relaxant, chamomile calms the body and mind and nettle provides iron and promotes circulation. Remember to opt for honey instead of sugar if you like it sweet.
How do you like to reward yourself after a workout? What motivates you to exercise?
