The new excuse to have a sleep-in

If you’re anything like me, it probably takes you a little while to get going in the morning. It doesn’t matter whether you get to sleep at 9pm or midnight, you’re always just that teeny bit sluggish in the AM.
The good news is, you shouldn’t feel too guilty. A new study investigating workplace efficiency in the UK has shown you may be tired because your body clock simply doesn’t agree with your working hours.
According to the research, we all have slightly different body clocks, with some of us suiting early starts more than others (which explains that chipper-in-the-morning friend who plagues you daily).
So, what do the biologists behind the study recommend? Well, they actually reckon our bosses should let us sleep in just a little if it suits us better. Apparently, allowing employees to adjust their work patterns to work with their need for zzz’s can result in a healthier, happier workplace!
As if that wasn’t enough incentive, not sleeping in as needed could actually result in what experts call ‘social jetlag’ – a condition that’s linked to diabetes, obesity and even cancer.
Personally, I am more than happy to get on board with this recommendation (*cue nervous wait for boss to read article).
Time will tell whether it actually gets implemented – until then, boost your energy levels by learning about the 6 signs you’re not sleeping properly.
Do you struggle to get going in the morning? Would you support a daily sleep-in?

Oh I wish ! My motherly duties don't allow that for me ! Instead I'm up half asleep listening to the wiggles !!

I love getting up early, especially getting in some precious 'me' time before everyone else is up.

I'm completely a morning person (I have to be because sometimes I have to get up at 5.40am to be in the clinic on time) and I usually go to bed around 11.30pm. 7am is considered a sleep-in for me!

Oh yes, I do struggle to get up in the morning because I am not a morning person at all - I am a night owl. I definitely support the idea of having a little lie in!

I enjoy a sleep-in, but I find I'm less productive when I do. I just can't seem to find motivation. Yet, if I get up and moving, I get a lot more done in quicker time

I am definitely NOT a morning person, and I really struggle with early morning starts, so this sounds wonderful to me!

Sounds great to me - I'm usually a bit of a night owl naturally (really NOT compatible with an office job which required attendance and utter concentration by 8 am). It's safe to say, 5 am starts are not a good idea for me on a regular basis ;) I much prefer this to the recent lone study (of a small number of participants) which came to the conclusion that those who sleep 6 hours/night are slightly less likely to have a CVA than those who sleep 8 hours, or as much as they need...

There's definitely been days where my body and mind need and want to sleep past the time that I'm supposed to be up - thankfully it's not that often.

I wish this would happen, in schools and workplaces, but it's never going to happen haha.

Haha, there is no way my workplace would allow us to come in whenever we desired :)

As much as I don't really like waking up early, my body clock naturally wakes me up around 8am. I'd much prefer to force myself out of bed to get into work early, so I can get out early! Pity I still have to do the standard 8:30-5pm... I'd love to get in to work at 7am and leave at 3pm haha.

I live in a house full of early risers, so I've adapted. But for the person who needs an occasional sleep in, if they're going to be more productive as a result, that can only be a good thing.

I am totally on board with this! I am definitely not a morning person and like you said, no matter how early I sleep I still feel sluggish in the morning.

Ha ha, I already start the latest at my work, which is 8.30am so I don't think my boss will go along with this one.

No excuses needed here for a sleep-in. I'm definitely a night owl.
