The plate that counts your calories for you. Yes, really!

What’s for dinner tonight? Let’s say you’re planning on making spaghetti, but you’re also on a diet and don’t want to overdo it on the carbs. As such, you’re mindful of measurements and counting the calories as you go, making sure to keep track of everything that goes into the pot by logging the ingredients on whatever fitness app you’ve downloaded. Laborious much?
Enter the shiny new SmartPlate (aka your new best friend):
Created by Philadelphia-based startup company Fitly, the SmartPlate has three digital cameras and image recognition technology to analyse your food. It transmits the data and weight of your meal to your iOS, letting you know exactly what you’re about to chow down on - calorie count and all. It even has the ability to differentiate between wholegrain and white bread, brown and white rice, and so on. Pretty impressive stuff, right?!
But don’t get too excited just yet.
Fitly is still in development, with plans to get it off the ground and into our kitchens by 2016, which means we’ve got another year left of manually controlling our food portions. All good things take time…
Watch the video demo here and see for yourself why this is one truly smart plate:
What do you thin of the SmartPlate? Would you buy one?

I recall the portion sizes from my nutrition certificate studies - 1/2 green leafy vegetables, 1/4 protein and 1/4 good carb.

It's kind of neat, but it's limited in its use. You can only have 3 things on your plate, otherwise how would the camera know how much there is of each thing that was combined? What if you wanted to have meat and 7 veg? Or how does it determine the calorific content of a sauce when it doesn't know the ingredients? And it's not attractive at the current kickstarter price of USD 99, let alone the supposed retail price of USD 199. It's an interesting exercise in the application of tech, but that's about it.

Wow great technology, not sure I would use it though! I eat pretty healthy and this would probably drive me crazy ;)

Silly clever gadget. We need also one saying: Do not eat that crap! when putting processed junk, dairy, carcasses...on a plate

That would be an annoying plate to wash. I hand-wash all my dishes and cutlery so...

I can't imagine how much a plate like this would cost, but I would definitely be interested.

As much as I love gadgets, it's a pass from me. I eat mostly health, well balanced and that is as fresh as possible. I am a little over food obsessing. My Instagram feed is full of photos of friends' meals and I really am not that interested in what they are eating.

NOOOOPE. I'm all for being sensible and thinking about eating smaller portions but I wouldnt want my phone/plate telling me what I can or can't eat

The last thing I want is to have an obsession with calorie counting, my life is hectic enough and I have no time to count every thing I put in my mouth, If you exercise and eat well then forget calorie counting, diets don't work!
