Does natural deodorant really work?

The journey to find a great natural deodorant that works can be an arduous one – because let’s be honest, a lot of them don’t seem to do their job. And what’s the point in buying a natural deodorant if it doesn’t actually negate body odour? That’s just wasted cash and nobody has time for that.
So why do so many people switch to natural deodorant? And is there actually a natural deodorant that works? We spoke to Annabelle Personeni, A'kin’s Botanical Chemist, to find out.
Natural deodorant vs regular deodorant – what’s the difference?
“Natural deodorant is gentle on the skin and respects the skin physiology,” says Annabelle. “In comparison, a regular antiperspirant interferes with the natural skin processes by blocking sweat ducts.” So rather than stopping you from physically sweating like a regular antiperspirant spray does, a natural deodorant will work on the odour of sweat.
The base of the formulations of true natural deodorants are generally also as gentle and as eco-friendly as possible, without nasties like ethoxylated solubilisers. Some natural deodorants, such as the A'kin Geranium & Cedarwood Natural Deodorant, are also formulated without zinc based actives, which makes them more biodegradable and therefore better for the environment. So no nasties for you or the earth – win, win!
How does natural deodorant work?
You might be surprised to know that the sweat your body releases to cool down on a hot summer day or after a strenuous workout doesn’t smell. “Sweat has no scent but offensive malodour occurs when skin's natural bacteria start degrading it,” explains Annabelle. “It’s the by-products of sweat that cause malodour so a good deodorant will reduce the degradation of sweat by bacteria, then cover any possible malodour.”
The A'kin Geranium & Cedarwood Natural Deodorant provides the perfect natural odour-neutralising solution thanks to the natural active in the formula, which slows down the ability of bacteria to degrade sweat. The environmentally-friendly alcohol in the formula also helps to reduce the quantity of bacteria on the skin, while natural essential oils emit a beautiful aromatic fragrance to cover the possible residue malodour.
Is there really a natural deodorant that works?
Now you know what natural deodorant is, we’ve come to the million dollar question – does it actually work as well as regular antiperspirants? According to Annabelle, it does. “There is no reason to say that natural deodorant is less effective than a non-natural deodorant,” she says. “The efficacy of a deodorant is generally dependant on the concentration of the actives and the fragrance. So whether it works does not depend on how natural it is.”
So if you’ve been looking high and low for a natural deodorant that’s worth opening your purse for, you can call off the search – because yes, we’ve found a natural deodorant that works. It’s the A'kin Geranium & Cedarwood Natural Deodorant and it’s about to become your new handbag essential.
Not only is it a natural deodorant in an easy-to-use spray formula that can be used on the whole body (perfect for touching up throughout the day!), it also smells amazing – the aromatic blend of Geranium, Cedarwood and Patchouli oils are not only great for odour control but they can also have an aromatherapy-based calming and uplifting effect. Plus, it’s not powder-based so you can forget about those unsightly white marks.

It's quite an informative article, but I don't think I will change to a natural deodorant.

I really want to try the A'kin Geranium & Cedarwood Natural Deodorant. I went to Priceline recently but they were out of stock which was disappointing.

I don't use deodorant. I think I am that 1% of the population that bacteria don't feed on my sweat.

I have been wanting to switch to natural deodorant and have only tried Sukin. It smells great but I hate the wet feeling after spraying and waiting for it to dry off is a bit of a pain and time-waster. I don't think it does much to keep the area dry during the day either, so I was a bit turned off at finding a natural alternative.

It's a good one! Waiting to use up some other natural deos before returning to that one, which actually holds up during summer months and sport

It's incredibly individual. I like the sound of this new Akin and will always look for aluminium free.

I have tried a natural coconut deodorant by Eco by Sonia. It had a lovely scent to it and did work but took a while to get used to. I didn't realise Akin had this deodorant and am keen to give it a try. I just started using their natural eye/makeup remover water and its wonderful.

Interesting! I always wondered what the whole deal was around natural deodorant! however I would not pay $10 for deodorant and the bottle looks really awkward! I prefer roll on deodorant myself

I'm glad the article explains the bacteria and sweat functions. I think people are easily turned off when natural deodorants tend not to block sweat. I switched to natural two years ago and am happy there's a good range of products currently available. I use sprays in cooler months - currently on Sukin but will try that A'kin one next! I've also used pastes from Black Chicken Remedies and Noosa Basics. They're easy and nice. However, I've just bought the MooGoo roll-on, as I'm ready for a break from using my fingers to apply the pastes every day.

I tried a natural deodorant once from Coles and loved it at first, but then I noticed that it wasn't working as hard as I needed it to. Honestly, the only difference between natural deos and others is the stopping of sweat. Otherwise, natural deos work fine (might buy them this winter to give my skin a break).

Interesting read about deodorant's yet I've not tried a natural one before I use a anti-perspirant roll-on & I like the current one I'm using at the moment I would give this a go but after noticing it's a spray not at all interested & that's because sprays like this one don't stay on the skin for long where as the roll-on stay on longer through out the day with out reapplying & not only that my roll-on deodorant is really soft on my skin especially after I've shaved under my arm's no irritation's at all :)

Love A'kin! Haven't tried their natural deodorant. Natural deodorant can be hit or miss! Some smell great but don't have a lasting effect! Black Chicken Remedies makes a great natural deodorant.
