How to build your winter beauty routine at the supermarket
We’re often told that when the season changes, our beauty routine should change with it. But that doesn’t mean you have to splash a lot of cash to make tweaks to your skin care steps, take care of your hair or keep the dreaded winter dryness at bay.
Take a wander down the toiletries aisle of your supermarket and you’d be surprised at the wide selection of affordable and effective products there for you to find. And if you think you’ve already tried the best supermarket beauty buys on offer, there’s some newness you may be interested too!
For your hair
Just like our skin, some hair types can also become drier in winter thanks to the change in temperature and cold, windy conditions. You may find you experience more frizz during this season too, as a result.
The balance between finding a hydrating hair product that doesn’t weigh the hair down is tricky, but new to the supermarket is John Frieda Frizz Ease Weightless Wonder Shampoo and Conditioner, formulated to cleanse and smooth the hair cuticle for tamed and hydrated hair that’s still soft to the touch and full of bounce.
On the flipside, if flatness and thin hair is your concern over frizziness, keep an eye out for the new fruity Hair Food shampoos and conditioners from Garnier. The watermelon flavour in particular (see Garnier Fructis Hair Food Watermelon Shampoo and Conditioner) is formulated to plump the hair for a fuller, volumised appearance. Plus, as you can imagine, it smells delicious.
As for the classics? You can’t go wrong with the Touch Of Silver Brightening Shampoo to maintain your fresh highlights or keep your blonde bright. It’s such a bargain! You can now get a huge 500ml bottle for $20.
For your skin
Every skin type needs hydration, there’s no doubt about that. But it also doesn’t mean that piling nothing but heavy creams and oils onto the face will work for everyone.
In fact, exfoliating should still remain a key part of your routine throughout winter, to ensure all dead skin is removed and the pathway is cleared for your hydrating products to penetrate.
Our Trial Team recently tried the new Bioré® Daily Detox Exfoliator, rating it 4 stars and commending it for it’s gentle yet effective Jojoba-derived micro-beads (oh and it’s only $10!). Those with sensitive skin or acne-prone skin found it worked a treat for them but if you’re after something that resurfaces the skin even more, try the Olay Vitamin C Resurfacing Treatment Mask + AHA Peel Serum Activator. The two-step treatment brings together the brightening forces of vitamin C with chemical exfoliant AHA for a revitalising experience that’ll leave you with that post-facial glow.
And don’t forget your body too! It also needs exfoliating year-round, especially if you like to put your hair removal routine on hold (after all, what’s the point in winter?!). At least once a week, give your limbs a good scrubbing down – we love the Essano Coconut Oil Invigorating Body Scrub ($15 at Coles) – and follow with a nourishing body cream. Our new obsession? JERGENS Ultra Healing Body Balm. It’s thick and balm-like, but easily spreadable and will nix scaly legs in a flash.
For your handbag
If we could only recommend three handbag essentials for winter, they would be hand sanitiser, hand cream and lip balm.
We like the Aqium Antibacterial Hand Sanitiser because it’s effective, dries fast after application and won’t irritate the hands. Hands do typically become drier in winter as they’re exposed to the cold hair, so pairing your on-the-go sanitiser with a hand cream to match is a good idea. The NIVEA 3-in-1 Anti-Age Hand Cream is a steal at just $10 and absorbs fast so you’re not left with any greasy residue.
When it comes to the lips, prevention is best. To stop wind burn from wreaking havoc, always apply a balm before leaving the house and take it with you for re-application. The SunSense Lip Balm SPF 50+ keeps lips soothed and moisturised with a vitamin E and cocoa butter-enriched formula, plus the addition of SPF provides extra protection for your lips during this sensitive time of year.
For him, the kids and the home
Although we’re all for stocking the trolley with beauty buys for number one (you), the supermarket has picks for the whole family.
If the man in your life has decided winter is a great time to grow out his beard or moustache, the Just For Men Moustache & Beard may help him reach his lumberjack dreams. And if you’re worried the kids have been shelving peas under their plate when you’re not looking, the Swisse Kids Multi Gummies will help to prevent dietary nutritional deficiencies.
And lastly, if you’re looking for a new hand wash to pop in the kitchen and bathroom, the method Foaming Hand Wash Green Tea + Aloe is a wallet-friendly $5 and feature a biodegradable formula so you can feel less guilty about what’s been sent down your sink.
